Whiter Teeth For A More Beautiful You

Do you ever wonder if your teeth are as white as they are some years ago? How often do you stare in front of the mirror and check if your teeth have maintained the white pearly shine your friends used to admire?

Our teeth usually turn yellow with time. This color change can make us look older and less attractive. What causes the change in the color of our dentition? The passing of time wears away the colorless protective outer layer of our teeth called the enamel. The thinning of the enamel causes the yellow dentin to show through. The dentin is the yellowish innermost layer of the teeth following the enamel. Acidic saliva accentuates the thinning of the enamel making it more porous. Taking in more sugary foods can turn the saliva more acidic. The more sugar found in the oral cavity, the more acid is formed by the resident bacteria.

Some beverages particularly coffee, cola, tea and red wine can stain the enamel. Residues from these beverages can seep through the enamel and can cause dental staining. Even residues from berries can result into dental staining as well. Smoking is also found to cause teeth discoloration and so are tartar deposits.

Here are some of the options you have if you want to have pearly white teeth.

1. The most popular whitening procedure is power bleaching or chairside bleaching. This procedure is done by your dentist at the dental office. The procedure is done by applying a whitening gel to your teeth. The whitening gel contains 20 to 35 percent hydrogen peroxide. Your dentist then activates the bleaching agent by using a powerful light source. Yellowish and brown stains often respond more favorably with this type of whitening procedure although gray stains do not have high positive response with this type of treatment. Unlikely candidates for power bleaching are people with hypersensitive teeth and mouth tissues. With power bleaching, you can enjoy between 1 to 3 years of white pearly teeth.

2. You can have whiter teeth by using home bleaching or nightguard bleaching. This type of procedure can by done at home with the help of your dentist. Your dentist will take a dental impression of both your upper and lower teeth. From this dental impression, he will fabricate molds or trays that resemble an athlete's mouth guard. You will then apply whitening solutions to the trays. Your dentist will usually ask you to wear the mouth guard one to two hours a day or overnight or depending on how sensitive you are to the procedure. Your dentist will provide you a supply of the whitening solution. This type of whitening solution is usually a less concentrated form of the in-office bleaching solution. It will take about two weeks or more for the treatment to be completed. The duration of the treatment takes longer especially when the patient's teeth have turned yellow because of tobacco stain. Home bleached teeth usually last up to 3 years similar with power bleaching and the molds can be re-used later for touch-ups.

3. The simplest and easiest way to have whiter teeth is by using whitening toothpastes. These types of toothpastes contain chemical or polishing agents that remove surface stains from the teeth. Although this is the easiest way to have whiter teeth, this type of treatment doesn't provide the same good results that power bleaching and home bleaching offer.

You may be tempted to buy over the counter bleaching kits that claim good results. You should be aware that many of these products have not been approved by the American Dental Association and most do not meet the criteria for safety and effectiveness. Some one-size-fits-all mouth trays can allow the bleaching agents to escape to the gums and may cause irritation. It is better to ask for your dentist's help and opinion than encounter unwanted results later on.

Teeth Whitening - Nurse's Four Ways To Whiten Or Bleach Your Teeth And What To Look Out For!

If you're concerned about stains on your teeth there are four main methods available today for whitening the teeth. I'm going to explain the various methods and how well they work. These teeth whitening and bleaching methods include chairside bleaching or 'power bleaching', professional dispensed bleaching solutions, over-the-counter, TV, and Internet products and whitening toothpastes.

1. Power bleaching or also called chair-side bleaching. A dentist applies a gel or rubber shield to protect the gums and oral tissues and then puts bleach on the teeth. Make sure to ask if the dental bleaching agents the dentist uses has the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal. Sometimes a light or a laser may be used to help the bleach work better. However there aren't any products that use lasers that are accepted by the ADA at this writing. It may take more than one visit for this bleaching treatment. You'll be able to see the results right away, usually about five shades or so brighter. This treatment is supposed to work very well on a wide range of stains. However if your teeth are sensitive or even if they are not, there can be a range of pain experienced during and/or after the procedure. Make sure to do some research before you proceed. This type of dental whitening can be expensive, so make sure to have your dentist fully explain how much it will cost and what results you can expect.

2. Professionally dispensed bleaching solutions. Your dentist can sell you some teeth of these bleaching products for use at home. They usually contain peroxides that bleach the tooth enamel. Most of these products come in a gel form. The gel is placed in a mouth guard or tray that fits snugly inside the mouth around your teeth. How long you allow the gel to work depends on what results you want and your sensitivity to the bleaching gel. Some of these gel products are used for two times a day for about two weeks, and some of the other products are used overnight for one or two weeks. They may or may not help the many different types of staining. It's possible your teeth may turn about five to six shades whiter/brighter with long-lasting results. However the long term effects of the bleach on your sensitive gum tissue and from the possible absorbency into the oral and other bodily tissues is not known.

3. The over-the-counter, TV, and Internet products. These tooth whitening products are for use in your home and include teeth whitening strips, paint-on tooth products, and bleaching gels and trays. They use a lower volume of peroxide. You wear it throughout the day and apply some of it at night just before bedtime. They will have very limited results if you haven't had the stains removed by a dentist first. But they're supposed to help prolong the results you receive from stain removal by a dental professional. They are also supposed to help if the staining is due to age and/or certain foods. Your teeth may turn about two or more shades brighter for up to five months or so.

4. Tooth whitening toothpastes. All toothpastes on the market will help remove surface stain by the action of mild abrasives. Some whitening toothpastes have special polishing agents that remove even more of the stains. These products do not bleach or change the color of teeth; they help some surface stains only. You may see temporary results with some claims your teeth will be one to two shades brighter.

These are the four main methods for whitening the teeth. So before you use any tooth whitening products, have a talk with your dentist first. Your dentist may help you decide which method is the best one for you based on the type of stains that are on your teeth. Remember that not all products will work the same way on all people. And it's important to keep in mind that tooth whitening by itself does not make your mouth healthier and can actually create some dental or oral problems for you.

Teeth Whitening Might Work To Help Quit Smoking

In this article we are not saying that teeth whitening is one of the next fads to help you quit smoking but customers who have had laser teeth whitening treatment and see the benefits of having white teeth then think twice about continuing their smoking habit.

Laser teeth whitening is undertaken in salons where clients have a gum dam applied to protect their gums and then a stain removing gel is applied before the laser light is activated. The gel then gains deep in to the enamel removing the staining and this is all done just under one hour. Typically the teeth are lightened by 6-8 shades and the treatment can last up to 18 months depending on how and when the staining that caused the problem is then minimized otherwise the benefit is decreased.

Nicotine is not the only bad habit to cause staining to the enamel but caffeine, red wine, gravy and sauces will also stain the teeth but like many things it will depend on the frequency of usage but with such a simple and time effective treatment available for your teeth then no need to worry. Laser teeth whitening is also known as zoom whitening which is a commonly used name in the USA and even the Americans have developed Zoom 2 teeth whitening which is essentially the same but early adopters will want to try new names and ideas.

The name aside laser teeth whitening is a huge growth industry and with added benefits like helping clients to quit smoking then no wonder customers are prepared to travel to get the treatment.

Laser Bleaching For Whiter Teeth

If you only dreamed of flashing killer smiles everywhere you go but you are hindered by your dull, yellow teeth, laser teeth whitening could be the solution to make your dreams come true.

Bleaching is a teeth whitening procedure which involves putting a strong whitening solution on your teeth and activating the solution by shining a laser light on it, and must be done in the dentist's office and is known to make your teeth whiter up to several shades more. However it requires a patient to make as many as three visits to the dental clinic and is quite expensive, too. A patient has to shell out as much as $400 to $1,000 to pay for the treatment to get the results desired.

Once laser bleaching results to the desired whiteness of your teeth, you need to have touch ups or maintenance about every six months to one year. If you also continue smoking, taking in coffee, tea and other food and drinks that can leave stains on your teeth, your teeth will gradually turn dark again.

Laser teeth whitening whitens your teeth several shades, and you can get quicker results compared to other procedures like using whitening toothpastes or home whitening kits. However, you have to consult a dentist to assess your teeth and evaluate if you are suitable for the treatment.

The procedure takes only about one hour to perform. It is not hard to avail of laser teeth whitening because almost every dentist anywhere is offering this service to meet the growing demands of customers everywhere. Find a local dentist in your area who can perform a procedure for you to get a perfectly white set of teeth. You will not regret having your teeth whitened.

What Are Teeth Whitening Gels?

Part of looking good and feeling good is to frequently smile. But what if you are not confident enough to show off flashy smiles because your teeth have a yellowish color in contrast to the usually white teeth?

The most common causes of yellowish teeth are age, constant consumption of staining substances, smoking, excessive fluoride, old fillings and many others. While there may be whitening toothpaste products to choose from, teeth whitening gels are much more effective since this dental cleaning will not change the intrinsic staining of the teeth.

Applying teeth gels is a very safe procedure and the results can be seen almost immediately. It costs around $400 to $500. This process can make your teeth 3 shades whiter in a matter of days. Teeth whitening gels whitens natural teeth. It will not harm any artificial dental work by your personal dentist. But is very wise to consult your dentist first, before undergoing such procedure to clearly monitor the development of your teeth. For this process, only one hour per day treatment time is needed. Some formulas require less wear time as compared to other products. Patients who want to have whiter teeth can use teeth whitening gels that are 22% Carbamide Peroxide and 16% Carbamide Peroxide formulas.

Most often, one purchase of teeth gels is good for 28 applications, enough to give your teeth a whiter glow. But you also have to take note that teeth whitening gels can make your gums or teeth become sensitive. However, this effect is common while you are using gels with peroxide, but this not harmful. Effect of the teeth whitening gels is long-lasting. But exposure to foods that can stain the teeth like coffee, smoking, wines and medicine products, can darken the teeth once again. Since some people cannot do without these as part of their lifestyles, patients visit their dentist about 3 to 6 months after the first treatment.

Is Teeth Whitening Right For You?

Everybody wants to have a dazzling smile complete with brilliantly white teeth. It adds to the overall appeal of a person. Although only a few people are fortunate to have white teeth, teeth whitening systems are now available to remedy the situation for the less-fortunate.

First of all, you must pay a visit to the dentist because a dentist is the only person who can assess the condition of your teeth and recommend what strategy or treatment is best for you. If you go to the dentist with yellowish, chipped and uneven teeth, do not also expect miracles. Teeth whitening procedures can only help lighten the shade of your teeth. You can undergo teeth bleaching but you must maintain the whiteness you achieved. If you continue smoking, or do not limit your intake of tea, coffee and other food products which stain your teeth, do not expect your teeth to maintain their whiter shade.

Not everybody can undergo teeth whitening procedures, though. This is because some procedures are harmful to some individuals in some circumstances. For example, the bleaching method is not recommended for children under 16 years of age. This is because the nerve of the tooth in a person is enlarged until this age and it may result to complications.

Teeth whitening is also not recommended in pregnant or lactating women. Other persons who should not undergo procedures are those people with sensitive teeth and allergies, receding gums or those with defective restorations. If you are allergic to whitening agents you should not use a bleaching product.

If you have gum disease, cavities or exposed roots, it is advisable to have your disease and cavities be treated first before undergoing any teeth whitening procedure. The whitening solutions may penetrate into your cavities and cause sensitivity. The same restriction applies for people who have tooth restorations like fillings and crowns. Again, it is important to check with your dentist before you make any move to whiten your teeth. Complications may arise that may not be worth having white teeth at all.

Many dentists provide whitening treatments similar to those used by the stars at a cost that is not astronomical. Whitening your teeth at the dentist is often worth the higher cost than doing it at home because it works faster and may last longer.

Professional bleaching treatments using light and peroxide use a customized mold that administers bleach to every nook and cranny of your teeth. These treatments can run from around $500 to $1,000 depending on the length of time and number of visits.

The same grocery store aisle that carries photos of gleaming celebrities also carry very cheap alternatives to cosmetic dentistry. Generic and name brand teeth whitening kits are very effective for the price, anywhere from $8 for a tube of whitening gel to $40 for a full whitening kit complete with trays.

Teeth whitening strips that can be worn for 15 to 30 minutes are quite popular for their ease. They sit easily on the teeth and are not obstructive when you talk and go about your day. Applied once or twice a day for about a week, teeth whitening strips produce good results. Strips are easier to apply than gel in trays overnight and are the most comfortable option. So, feel free to whiten away!

Learn More About The Teeth Whitening Procedure

Tooth whitening, a.k.a. tooth bleaching, has been a frequent subroutine in the cosmetic dentistry field. It is achieved for people with yellow tones to their teeth. This process is inexpensive and favorable, rather than waiting for hours to meet dentist. It is accomplished simply by means of external staining removal.

Additionally, the tooth stains are able to be whitened. The stains are typically from food and smoking. The procedure often encompasses applying a form of peroxide gel to remove discolorations and any stains and thus removing the color of the enamel and dentin of the teeth. The peroxide is applied to break down the oral cavities so that oxygen can enter the enamel of the teeth, thus the teeth is whitened. Thus, this allows the natural color returning of the teeth without damaging the surface.

Some of the times the process of teeth bleaching are followed by lasers as a catalyst. Although this is effective and fast, it has a drawback, which is more costly. As expressed above, the tooth whitening is not impossible to be done individually at home.

This needs a tooth whitening kits, which consist of:

- Teeth whitening gel

- Whitening brush

- Whitening strips

- Whitening toothpaste

The usage instruction manual varies and usually can be observed at the back of the package product.

Also, if you are searching for a more natural and healthy tooth whitening procedure, pear, lime, apple, and strawberry would be the best and most effective foods to consume as the replacements for actual whitening.

Cheap Teeth Whitening - An Affordable Way to a Nicer Smile

Perfect smiles with bright white teeth are greatly desired by most people. In fact, it seems that people with the best smiles get the best jobs, have the most friends, and are the most successful. Whether or not that is really true, having an attractive smile greatly boosts a person's self-esteem and confidence.

Is that bright smile really worth thousands of dollars? Cosmetic dentists charge up to two thousand dollars for a single one-hour whitening session. Just how much should a person be expected to invest in his or her smile, really? What about those people who cannot afford to spend huge sums of money to make their teeth whiter? Is cheap teeth whitening really a reasonable possibility?

The answer is yes. Many low-cost measures can be taken to make teeth brighter and whiter. The first, and least expensive, way, to whiter teeth is brushing. Some people opt to use pure baking soda. A box of baking soda costs less than a dollar, and will last for many months if used solely for brushing one's teeth. Using this compound for brushing can lighten the teeth by several shades with continuous use.

Another inexpensive method of brushing teeth is using Ultrabrite Advanced Whitening toothpaste. A tube of this also costs less than one dollar, and was found to be one of the most effective methods of tooth whitening according to Consumer Reports.

Good results can also be obtained by using regular strength (three percent) hydrogen peroxide. Gargling with this chemical once or twice daily will help to remove surface stains that result in teeth discoloration. Available for less than a dollar at local pharmacies, a bottle will last for months.

Another low-cost whitening method is using whitening strips. This product costs relatively little compared to bleaching kits, and effectively achieves similar results over approximately the same amount of time. These cost around $25 for a two week supply. Occasionally, the savvy shopper can locate coupons to defray the cost.

Alternatively, some people prefer the liquid gel that can be painted on the teeth and left on overnight. This product is available in 8 ounce containers, usually for less than $10. This product can be very effective as long as the gel is allowed to dry completely on the teeth.

Whether you choose these or find other unique bargains, consider the possibility that these cheap teeth whitening methods may be nearly as effective as paying a cosmetic dentist for more immediate results. Do the research and choose the method that is most effective and affordable for you.

Simple Teeth Whitening Tips - Protecting Your Smile

A bright smile is valued by our society as the key to success in business, in relationships, in social networking, and in possessing high self-esteem. Keeping those pearly whites shiny, however, can be a difficult chore, and many of the foods we eat, including coffee, juice, and tea. In addition, other chemicals, such as the tobacco in nicotine, can stain teeth to a brownish or yellowish, unattractive hue.

The field of cosmetic dentistry is experiencing a very profitable quantity of business as a result of this concern. In addition, marketers of teeth whitening kits find these products to be very profitable, and many people feel compelled to find some method of making their teeth appear whiter and brighter.

People don't have to spend thousands of dollars, however, to accomplish this goal. Individuals can take several simple steps that will help them to achieve this goal without purchasing stock in teeth whiteners. The most important thing that people can do is to visit the dentist and have their teeth cleaned twice yearly as recommended. A good cleaning removes surface stains and also alerts an individual to any potential breakdown of the protective enamel surfaces of his or her teeth.

Individuals who use products containing nicotine can impact the appearance of their teeth heavily and almost immediately by quitting. Smoking cigarettes, cigars, or pipes, or chewing tobacco, causes the teeth to become discolored and heavily stained with the first puff. Those who quit, and then visit a dentist for a good cleaning, will notice dramatic results instantly.

Another substance that impacts tooth color is coffee, tea, and cola beverages. Quitting coffee or tea or color is almost as difficult as quitting smoking, but achieves equally dramatic results. If people find themselves unable to quit entirely, they may choose to consider brushing immediately after drinking such a beverage, or at least attempting to decrease the amount of coffee or tea they choose to drink.

Eating plenty of crunchy fruits and vegetables is beneficial to the condition of one's teeth. The fiber in these foods acts as an abrasive surface when it contacts the tooth surface. This abrasive scrubs the tooth during the process of chewing, and helps to remove surface stains.

A couple of home remedies that are designed to brighten teeth are listed, but not recommended. The purpose of listing them is to warn people that using them can be harmful to the teeth. These remedies include brushing with strawberry pulp and rubbing lemon peels across the teeth. While these may help the teeth to appear whiter, the acid in these remedies can damage tooth enamel.

Everyone who desires to have a whiter, brighter smile can anticipate at least some success with the final simple technique offered here. Brushing the teeth twice daily with toothpaste and flossing regularly will also help to remove surface stains. Brushing regularly contributes greatly to a whiter, cleaner smile.

Teeth Whitening Guide

Teeth whitening term refers to a cosmetic dental procedure performed to whiten teeth. This in fact, is the most frequently applied dental procedure. The teeth whitening process usually involves bleaching of teeth in order to remove stains and brighten the patient's smile.

Teeth Discoloration Causes

Many different factors contribute to teeth discoloration, but one of the most common causes is the food and beverages you consume. Certain foods and drinks like berries, red wine, coffee, tea, and soda will discolor your teeth if frequently consumed over a long period of time. Some antibiotics, most notably tetracycline can stain your teeth as well. Another reason for tooth discoloration is smoking. Keep in mind that some people have naturally yellowish teeth, and in this case the color of their smile is determined by their genetics.

Teeth Whitening Options

There are many different teeth whitening options available on the market, due to the popularity of tooth whitening. The whitening procedure can be performed in a dental office or in the comfort of your own home. The in-office teeth whitening usually yields better and quicker results compared to the at-home whitening. If you whiten your teeth in a dental office, it is very likely to see results right after the procedure has been completed. Many people do not feel comfortable in a dental office and if that's the case the at-home teeth whitening can be a better choice. You can whiten your teeth with over the counter products like whitening strips or trays with whitening gel. You can also use a whitening product prescribed by your dentist, which is usually a mouth tray with strong bleaching gel. If you decide to whiten your teeth at home, make sure that you follow the application instructions your dentist provided or the instructions that come with the over the counter whitening product.

Teeth Whitening Costs

Teeth whitening cost vary greatly depending on the method of whitening you choose. Obviously in-office teeth whitening performed by dentist will be the most expensive option and it may from several hundred to thousands of dollars. Over the counter products are cheaper teeth whitening alternative with a price tag starting at $30.

After a Teeth Whitening Procedure

Teeth whitening results do not last forever - on average you can expect between several months and a year. However the good news is that you can prolong the effects of teeth whitening by simply avoiding foods and beverages that stain teeth and smoking. Such foods and drinks include but are not limited to coffee, tea, red wine, and berries. If you decide to consume these foods then brush your teeth immediately after.

Teeth Whitening Results

If the same teeth whitening procedure is applied to two different persons, most likely the results will be different. Not all teeth respond to whitening equally well. For example if teeth have yellow shade, chances are that they can be whitened fairly easily. If the teeth are gray in color, then whitening might be much harder, if not impossible. If you are thinking about teeth whitening, then is advisable to consult your dentist first, as they can recommend the best teeth whitening treatment for you.

It all started a few years ago when famous movie stars first began to use the white strip style teeth whitening kits which required the application of a simple strip of whitening agent across the teeth. However, as time progressed, and people realized that they simply could not make their teeth white fast enough, technology began to evolve, giving rise to the brand new laser teeth whitening treatments of today. Teeth Whitening The Laser Zoom Way

Information on the internet is available for just about everything and like teeth whitening there is a danger of information overload and sometimes conflicting information resulting in customers getting confused about what the best thing to do.

It really is quite simple when it comes to teeth whitening the options are the off the shelf kits which are cheap and mostly ineffective, the dentists route which requires you go to the dentist for a pre consultation before he measures your teeth for a tray which you need to insert in to your mouth for two to three weeks and sometimes your continuous bad habits will outweigh the removal of the staining.

Laser teeth whitening or Zoom teeth whitening as it is also known is a treatment that is carried out at beauty salons and the client has a gum dam inserted to protect their gum during the treatment and then will have the stain remover applied to their teeth which is activated when the laser light is started.

Clients benefiting from Zoom teeth whitening would normally have been created by caffeine, coffee, tea, red wine and gravy to name a few of offending substances!

Many professionals have been born on the back of this fairly new industry and these include The White Teeth Company who operate in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Bedfordshire their website has a full list of salons at http://www.whiteteethcompany.co.uk/laser_teeth_whitening_locations.html

Zoom teeth whitening is not for everyone as some people will need dental treatment prior to having any course of teeth whitening and they will need to visit their dentist to get their teeth and gums checked for problems.

After a successful zoom teeth whitening treatment customers should look to change their habits as the likely outcome is the teeth will become stained again after a few months and the investment incurred to have the treatment will be wasted.

Beauty salons looking to increase their range of services are looking at Zoom teeth whitening as a business opportunity to offer the service to their existing clients and also benefit from attracting new clients to their business.

The White Teeth Company is looking for new salons all over the South East and for further information on Zoom teeth whitening click http://www.whiteteethcompany.co.uk/affiliates.html Or visit http://www.whiteteethcompany.co.uk

Are Home Teeth Whitening Systems Safe?

Getting a whiter and brighter smile used to mean that you had to head to a dentist for an expensive and time consuming whitening treatment. Often, insurance did not pay for it, so you needed to foot the bill yourself. But times have change. With the invention of home teeth whitening systems, you can whiten your teeth in the privacy of your home as often as you like.

The safety of home teeth whitening systems is something of a concern, however. By following the directions on the packaging, you will have a much lower risk of any side effects - pain, tooth sensitivity, poor results, etc. Take some time to read and then reread the directions before you begin. If you have any questions, you can call the customer service toll free number on the box.

If you have troubles with sensitive teeth or enamel loss, you may want to speak to your dentist about home teeth whitening systems before you run out and buy one. You might be at a higher risk of pain and sensitivity, making teeth whitening a miserable experience. In addition, if you do have troubles with enamel loss, you might be further weakening the weak spots on your teeth, increasing your risk of tooth decay.

Home teeth whitening systems are safe so long as you use them as directed. Wanting even whiter teeth takes time, so don't overstep the recommended time constraints or doubling up on the usage to speed up the process. If you use a teeth whitener more often than you should, you can weaken the surface of your teeth and potentially be at risk for cavities and tooth discoloration.

It is recommended that only those above 18 use home teeth whitening systems as teeth can be too sensitive before that age, causing long term damage. If you still decide to try one of those home whitening kits, I strongly recommend to try Crest Whitening Strips, which are very good priced and you will experience significant results.

Professional vs DIY Teeth Whitening Systems

Teeth whitening is now something that many people are having done and is also very popular with celebs who want to look their best. It won't improve your health; it's simply a cosmetic job which lightens the stains on your teeth. So why have your teeth gone stained and yellow? It's most likely to be due to smoking, drinking coffee, tea and cola. Your teeth have pores on the enamel which hold onto these stains and normal every-day brushing isn't enough to remove them.

Discoloration can also occur with age. Stains can appear over time from the inside because of excess fluoride and possibly medication. Tooth whitening will deal with the stains which lie on the outside of your teeth and it needs to be done on a regular basis.

You can whiten your teeth either at home or at a dentist. Home kits can be bought from your local chemist, alternatively you can have trays custom made by your dentist. Whichever method you choose the you will need a series of whitening procedures of varied lengths. It's always a good idea to check with your dentist to find out the pros and cons of each method.

Before going ahead with having your teeth whitened, they need to be cleaned by a dentist and cavities should be filled. If you have receding gums you should have this looked at as the roots may be exposed. The roots of your teeth have no enamel so whitening won't be effective. It also won't work if you have crowns or veneers.

How The Teeth Whitening Process Works

A solution made with hydrogen peroxide is put into trays which are similar to mouth or night guards. The trays are placed over your teeth and are left to do their job for one or two hours. If you are doing this yourself then you would leave it in overnight.

If you go to your dentist for the teeth whitening process, each session will take less time but you will need several more visits. The dentist is also there to keep a check on the progress of the whitening. With the DIY method on the other hand, you'll need to be very careful about using and wearing the mouth guards as there is the risk of any leaked solution irritating the gums.

The idea is that the longer the solution is in contact with your teeth, the whiter they become. Unfortunately, not all stains and discoloration can be removed. Some whitening products will only work if they come into contact with either heat or light. These are best to be used by professionals.

Teeth whitening is not a permanent solution, it will only last one to 6 months. However the more you do to prevent staining the longer lasting the results. You may experience gum sensitivity although this should just be temporary. Ultimately the process is very safe although pregnant ladies shouldn't have it done. This is only because no studies have been conducted to find out if the whitening chemicals affects the unborn baby.

Do-It-Yourself Teeth Whitening Kits

Are you one of those people who were "absent when pearly white teeth were distributed to the world?" You need not lose hope, because modern technology made it possible to alter your destiny by availing of teeth whitening kit and products now in the market.

Being short of cash is not also a hindrance to get your dream of white teeth possible. You can have whiter teeth using a do-it-yourself teeth whitening kit as the best option.

Spending for a teeth system is much affordable compared to the cost of going to the dentist for a professional teeth whitening procedure. You can get as kit for a few dollars at any store or pharmacy. However, before you apply use any kits at home, it is best that you consult a dentist who can assess the condition of your teeth and let him/her evaluate what procedure is best for you.

If you really cannot afford to buy teeth whitening kits or products from the market, don't lose hope because you can make your own solutions and do the procedures by yourself in your home. You only need to look around and use objects that are already in your home, so you need not spend dollars to get your kit ready.

Household items like cups, spoons, bowls, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide can prove useful, and for sure these are available in your home.

As part of your procedure you can mix hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to produce a pasty mix with a toothpaste-like consistency on a one is to one ratio. You can then leave the mixture on your teeth for about two minutes, brush it afterwards to get rid of the taste and you have an instant teeth whitening kit which you could use at least once a week.

How To Whiten Your Teeth In Less Than An Hour

Do you know that you can whiten your stained teeth in less than one hour? This could be achieved easily by your dentist in his office. This particular short time in-office tooth whitening system employs a special hydrogen peroxide-based tooth whitening gel compound. This gel comes in prepackaged as two individual components, one as a powder and the other as a liquid. They are mixed during application to produce a paste which contains 35% hydrogen peroxide concentration and pH of 6.5.

The procedure for this type of in-office tooth whitening system utilizes xenon-halogen whitening light. These lights are produced specifically for use with this tooth whitening gel. When the light is well positioned, it could illuminate the upper and lower teeth at the same time. In this system there is also the use of LED (light - emitting diode) whitening light.

Both light units can emit light with wavelength of 405 and 580nm, and so these lights were blue-green in color. Therefore light with this type of wavelength range can effectively activate some aspect of the tooth whitening gel, and hence aids its whitening ability. Studies have shown that the xenon-halogen and LED whitening lights do not produce significant heat on the teeth undergoing treatment.

This protocol takes duration of less than one hour. Each tooth whitening section has three individual applications of the special gel, and each application can last for 8 minutes. Therefore, your teeth will be exposure for total time duration of 24 minutes to the whitening gel. This type of tooth whitening system has at-home usage option. It is not a formal part of professional tooth whitening system procedure. However, an at-home paint-on tooth whitening product could be given to a patient as an additional after in-office treatment.

The procedure for this treatment is slightly different from the general steps used in a model professional procedure. If you should choose this whitening system for your teeth whitening whitening, first and foremost, consult your dentist and make the decision with him/her.

Teeth Whitening: Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

Teeth whitening is one of the easiest ways to improve your appearance. Whiter teeth can boost your self-esteem and confidence. Years of drinking coffee, tea, cola, red wine, and smoking eventually takes their toll on teeth. The results are dull, yellowish-colored teeth. Some teeth may have darker gray-colored stains due to antibiotics. Most teeth will benefit from tooth whitening. Teeth whitening is a proven safe and effective way to brighten stained, discolored teeth.

Your dentist has a variety of methods for restoring a bright white smile including porcelain veneers, composite bonding, implants and whitening, also known as bleaching. However, of all the advances made in dentistry to enhance the appearance of the teeth, whitening is the easiest and least invasive, and effective for 3 out of 4 cases. The procedure is safe, simple, and more affordable than ever before. Because of these reasons and more, whitening has become very popular.

Should I consult a dentist about teeth whitening?

You may want to start by speaking with your dentist. They can tell you whether whitening procedures would be effective for you. Whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellowish hued teeth will probably bleach well, brownish-colored teeth may not bleach as well, and grayish-hued teeth may not bleach well at all.

Bleaching may not enhance your smile in the event you have had bonding or tooth-colored fillings placed in your front teeth. The whitener will not affect the color of these materials and they will stand out in your newly whitened smile. You may want to investigate other options in this case such as porcelain veneers or dental bonding.

What teeth whitening methods are available to me?

All whitening products contain peroxide either as carbamide peroxide (CP) or hydrogen peroxide (HP). Peroxide dissolves the organic stains in the tooth to change the color and produce a whitened effect.

There are four types of peroxide-containing tooth whitening products available:

* In-practice products are applied by a dental professional. These products contain a high percentage of CP or HP and are applied directly to the teeth. Some activated by heat, light, or laser. This may be the product for you if you?re in a hurry for whiter teeth and you don?t have tooth sensitivity. For very dark-colored teeth, the whitening process can be sped up in two to three hours followed by a take-home product until the desired whiteness is achieved.

* A take-home product supervised by a dentist is the most popular whitening method. These products contain a lesser percentage of CP or HP than in-practice products and are worn in a tray overnight or during the day at home. A custom-fitted tray is made to hold the whitening product directly against the teeth while lessening its contact with the gums. Some products have fluoride added to help prevent or treat mild tooth sensitivities. The typical stains of ageing will whiten in seven to fourteen days when the tray is worn overnight.

* Over-the-counter (OTC) whitening products contain a small percentage of HP or CP. Caution should be used with these products as many contain an acidic solution that can wear away tooth enamel. OTC products use a bulky, one-size-fits-all tray to hold the product. Usually more product is swallowed than stays in the tray because of the trays poor fit against the teeth. It can take up to six months and the purchase of several kits to get whiter teeth. Flexible strips coated with whitening gel have recently been introduced as an OTC at-home tooth whitening method. The strips are worn on the front teeth and folded over to keep them in place. Results are reported to be noticeable after fourteen days and effective for 6 months.

* Over-the-counter whitening toothpastes contain a small percentage of HP, CP, or polishing ingredient. The toothpastes are effective in keeping teeth cleaner and whiter looking but some may be very abrasive. The harsh abrasive will wear away the enamel with repeated use gradually making the teeth look yellow. Whitening toothpastes remove surface stains and prevent new stains from building up. Whitening toothpastes however aren?t in contact with the teeth long enough to remove internal stains. Ask your dentist about the safety and cavity protection of specific toothpastes before you buy.

How should I choose a teeth whitening method?

It is highly advisable to inform your dentist about your goals regarding teeth whitening. They can advise you about the most suitable method and also outline the procedure, likely results, side effects and address any questions you may have.

How does teeth whitening achieve results?

The bleaching gel is usually hydrogen or carbamide peroxide that breaks down into oxygen molecules. These molecules go into the tiny pores of the enamel and dentin and break up the stains that block out the light. More light passes through the teeth and makes them look lighter as the stains are broken into smaller and smaller pieces. Stains that are accumulated over time that are yellow to slightly brown produce the best results. Teeth that are dark brown to blue-grey are the most difficult to bleach because the stain is deeply embedded in the structure of the tooth. These types of stains are usually caused by medications taken during the development of the teeth such as tetracycline and can take a minimum of three weeks to see results and as much as six months for complete results.

Results can be seen within an hour, overnight or within three to four days depending on the bleaching gel used and the length of time it is worn. Complete results can be achieved in as little as a week or as much as several months depending on the source of the stain and the ability of the teeth or tooth to be bleached. The whitening procedure may last for up to three years and even longer in some cases depending on personal habits. A simple process of bleaching for one or two nights with a single gel syringe is usually sufficient to brighten the color again.

What takes place at the initial visit to the dentist?

You will be able to talk with your dentist about the changes you would like to make in your appearance at the first visit with your dentist. Your dentist will explain the different options available to you, the procedure itself, and its risks and limitations.

Your dentist will begin with a complete medical history and examine your teeth. They may also take photos or x-rays and give you specific instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. Any large cavities may need to be addressed before bleaching can begin. Take this opportunity to ask all the questions you have about the procedure. Learning everything you can about your options, risks and benefits is the key to making an informed decision.

How are the treatments carried out?

There are three types of bleaching procedures to choose from. Two of them are performed in the dental practice and the third is a take-home self-administered treatment.

* In-Practice whitening procedures

For laser and power bleaching, a dentist begins by applying a protective material to your gums and lips in order to isolate the teeth. A special bleaching solution usually containing hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth. A high intensity light or laser is directed at the teeth and activates the bleaching agent causing the gel to release the oxygen molecules. Treatments for both power and laser bleaching can take as little as 45 minutes but usually last somewhere between one and two hours.

These techniques work great for a single discolored tooth as well. The bleaching solution is placed on the outside of the tooth if the tooth has become dark due to trauma but has not had a root canal. The solution can be placed on the outside as well as the inside of the tooth if the tooth has had a root canal. Leaving a bleaching solution inside the tooth and sealing the opening is referred to as ?walking bleach?. The solution inside the tooth for a walking bleach is changed about once a week. Results can take several weeks but nothing has to be worn in the mouth.

* Take-home whitening

Take-home bleaching is performed at home under the indirect supervision of a dentist. The dentist takes impressions of the patient?s teeth and then creates a perfectly fitted mouthguard at the first appointment. This mouthguard will allow the patient to apply a bleaching solution to the teeth while protecting the rest of the mouth from contact with the bleaching chemicals.

The concentration of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in the gel is not as strong as that used in power or laser bleaching procedures. No strong light source or laser is needed to activate the bleaching agent. It is contact with the teeth that causes the gel to release oxygen. Take-home bleaching in most cases can take from one to three weeks to achieve maximum results. The dentist during this time may want to check the progress of the treatment.

Will I experience any discomfort?

The amount of discomfort experienced varies from person to person and depends on the method used. Most adults usually experience little if any discomfort. An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory may help in the case of some discomfort. Consult your dentist for more options if the discomfort lasts for more than 2 to 3 days.

Decreasing the sensitivity may be as easy as placing a gel fluoride under your dentist?s instruction in your bleaching tray for an hour or so. Other materials may be used to address the sensitivity you may experience. Check with your dentist for the best options for your particular needs.

You should discuss your goals, budget, and pain tolerance with your dentist in order to help them determine the procedure, or combination of procedures, that will produce the best results for you.

What can I expect after teeth whitening?

The results of teeth whitening vary but most people are happy with the results. Patients should avoid foods that stain such as tobacco and red wine for about a week after any bleaching treatment. Keeping teeth clean with flossing and brushing can maintain whiteness. Tooth bleaching lasts on average about 1 to 3 years. Bleaching may last even longer if you are not a regular tobacco user and do not eat many foods that are known to stain teeth.

Decalcified spots are white spots that affect the calcium in the enamel. These spots appear chalky white and are difficult to treat with just bleaching. Your dentist may recommend a procedure called micro-abrasion. This procedure can be done by itself or in conjunction with bleaching. The micro-abrasion material is much like the paste used to clean and polish teeth. The paste consists of an abrasive combined with a hydrochloric acid used to ?polish? out the white or brown spots. The procedure can be performed usually in one practice visit and can be done without anesthesia.

How long will the teeth whitening last?

The effects of the teeth whitening should last for 1 to 3 years. Daily brushing and flossing will assist in maintaining the whiteness. The duration of the whiteness will also depend on your personal habits. Drinking red wine, tea, coffee or smoking will shorten the life of the new whiteness. You may want to conduct a re-treatment in the future. This should not be as costly and time consuming as the original whitening procedure as you will already have the custom made trays.

Am I an ideal candidate for teeth whitening?

In general, the best candidates for teeth whitening are:

? Mature enough to fully understand the procedure
? Experiencing stained and marked teeth
? Knowledgeable about the procedure
? Wanting to improve their appearance and confidence
? Realistic in their expectations

The above is only a partial list of the criteria that your dentist will consider in determining whether or not this procedure is appropriate for you. Be sure to ask your dentist if they consider you an ideal candidate for this procedure.

Are there any alternatives?

Teeth that have dark stains may be better candidates for another whitening option such as veneers, bonding, or crowns. Your dentist can discuss the options best suited for your situation.

Patients interested in whitening their teeth should consult a dentist before taking on any form of treatment whatsoever. A consultation with a dentist will help you understand the benefits and risks associated with each of the options.

What are the risks and limitations?

Bleaching can produce side effects ranging from increased tooth sensitivity to pain and tenderness in the gums, tongue and other soft tissues. There is also a possibility of over-bleaching. The result will be a translucency that may appear grey from the shadows of the mouth. There is a very low percentage of this occurring and only if the bleaching process is over-extended. Having a dentist supervise the process can eliminate this risk.

With take-home bleaching there is a small risk of ingesting the gel administered by the dentist. The chances of this occurring are relatively small since your bleaching tray should fit almost perfectly around your teeth. However, if the gel is ingested, it may result in nausea, vomiting or burning. You should contact a doctor immediately if this occurs to you.

How do I choose an appropriate dentist?

It is very important you select a dentist adequately trained and experienced in teeth whitening. Your dentist is most likely equipped to administer teeth whitening. They will be able to assist you achieve your goals pertaining to teeth whitening.

What questions should I ask my dentist?

1. Are the desired results I described realistic?

2. Is there an alternative treatment that I should consider as well?

3. How long will the procedure take?

4. How much does it cost?

5. What is your experience in performing this procedure?

6. Have many patients had significant complications?

7. Can you give me some idea of the result I will achieve after the teeth whitening?

8. What should I expect after the procedure and what things should I avoid?

Anything else I should know?

? Tell your dentist about any allergies you have to foods, drugs, vinyl, peroxide, or environmental elements.

? Tell your dentist about all medications you are taking including prescription and non-prescription.

? Carefully follow any instructions your dentist gives you.

At Home Teeth Whitening Tips

Many individuals lack self-esteem because their smile is not as white and bright as they would like. Most of these individuals are interested in various methods that they can use in order to succeed in teeth whitening at home. Here, you will be introduced to a number of "at home" teeth whitening tips that is sure to provide you with that bright, white smile that you have been longing to achieve.

One of the first teeth whitening tips includes the use of a little table salt and lemon juice. Many individuals have found that by mixing these two effective cleaning solutions, and then applying them to the teeth, that they are cleaned relatively well. This is an easy and effective method of ensuring that teeth are cleaned appropriately. Furthermore, it is safe and it costs very little. For just about $3.00 you can create an at home teeth whitening mixture that you can use for months to come!

One of the oldest remedies when it comes to home teeth whitening, yet one of the most effective, is the implementation of baking soda. Many individuals live by this solution. You simply take a bit of baking soda, place it in a container, and then add just enough water to make a paste-like solution. Once the right consistency is established, you will simply place this solution on your toothbrush and brush your teeth as you would if you were using toothpaste. Many individuals find that this teeth whitening remedy is most effective if a store bought pre-rinse solution is purchased. Many may simply elect to pre-rinse using a solution of baking soda and water.
Many people live by the true power of oranges when it comes to at home teeth whitening solutions. It is said that if an individual takes the peel of an orange and rubs the backside along the teeth that the teeth will naturally sparkle. This has proven to be an effective and safe remedy for numerous individuals. Many people also, in the same respect, use the peelings that protect a lemon. This method is even more effective if you add a dab of table salt to the peeling.
There are many people who have attempted to use baking soda and a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in order to create a teeth whitening remedy. While this is normally quite effective, one must be extremely careful when utilizing this whitening solution. The hydrogen peroxide should not be swallowed at all. If you do swallow any of the peroxide, it is important to drink at least a cup of water behind the accidental swallowing. This will ensure that the effects of the hydrogen peroxide are diluted.

In addition to the many whitening solutions mentioned above, it is important to ensure that you practice good oral hygiene when wanting to keep a bright white smile. You should brush after each meal and snack (if possible), and floss. You should also use a good mouth rinse. Those that have antiseptic qualities are among the best as far as a mouth rinse is concerned. Be sure to brush the tongue and sweep the inside of the jaw as well. All of these practices will help to ensure that your teeth are kept clean and white!
